The last segment of a bridge connecting two tunnels across Ston Bay on Croatia’s Pelješac peninsula has been erected on Friday by workers from the shipyard Brodosplit.
“Today, at the construction site of Ston bridge which is on the route of the access road to the Pelješac bridge, the last segment (C), which was 84.4 metres long and weighing 363.50 tonnes, was erected and assembled. Due to the configuration of the terrain, this segment was lifted by two mega cranes simultaneously in pairs,” the Split shipyard said in a statement.
One of the most demanding constructions in the project of road connection of southern Dalmatia, the new Ston bridge is 485 metres long and is 40 metres high, consisting of five pillars and two abutments.
The entire section consists of only six segments, which are built-in large, air-conditioned industrial sheds and transported by sea, making the quality and durability of such a structure much higher than when several smaller segments are built.
With the project of the ‘Ston’ bridge and the ‘Prapratno’ viaduct, Brodosplit continues its positioning in the market niche of large metal structures.
“We are pioneers in this part of Europe, perhaps on a global scale, to make 400-tonne constructions indoors under controlled conditions – which we then put into a project in one piece. With one of our cranes we can set up to 750 tonnes, and in a pair with two cranes like here, even up to a thousand tonnes,” said Tomislav Debeljak, President of the Board of Brodosplit.
Construction, transport and installation of metal structures are unique projects for Brodosplit, which constantly invests in equipment and machinery to meet customer requirements in terms of quality, capabilities, competitive offers and delivery times.
