Have you ever wondered how unique your name and surname are? For many of the first, second and third generation Croatians living abroad, their names are unique in their adopted countries, but how many share the name where it originated.
Now you can find out.
On Friday the Croatian Bureau of Statistics made a new search engine tool available where people can find out how many people share their first or last name, or even a combination of both, in Croatia.
The search engine returns only results where there are 10 or more people in Croatia with the name, so you can find out if you truly do have a unique name.
Many Croatians who migrated to the likes of Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand and other countries, had a unique name which posed a challenge to locals.
Pronunciation difficulties and spelling errors could lead to misunderstandings, making it difficult to adapt to new environments, so many Croatians opted to change their names to make them more easily recognisable and pronounceable in their new countries.
So if your name was changed, make sure to enter the original Croatian spelling.
