First battery-powered train from Croatia’s Končar part of UNESCO event

Croatian company Končar has been named an official partner of World Engineering Day 2025, an international event proclaimed by UNESCO.
This milestone coincides with UNESCO’s 80th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of this campaign, Končar is presenting its revolutionary battery-powered train – the first fully battery-operated regional train.
This cutting-edge train was recently showcased to an international audience recently in Germany.
Končar is the only Croatian company participating in this global initiative and is proud to feature the only train of its kind in the campaign.
“The collaboration not only underscores our dedication to sustainable innovation but also aligns our efforts with a globally recognised intergovernmental organisation renowned for its credibility and impact.
As part of this special campaign, we are showcasing our groundbreaking battery powered train – the first fully battery-operated regional train, recently unveiled to the international audience at InnoTrans in Berlin,” Končar said on LinkedIn.

With a growing focus on sustainability in the transport sector, Končar’s battery-powered trains represent a step forward in green innovation and a testament to Croatia’s role in global technological advancements.
These trains are among the most complex high-tech products developed by Croatian industry.
Končar’s battery-powered trains are designed for a track width of 1,435 mm and a top speed of 120 km/h. They feature a two-part composition with 102 seats and a total capacity for 216 passengers.
The roof-mounted lithium NMC battery packs have a total energy capacity of 736 kWh. With safety being a top priority for KONČAR, the battery packs meet the strictest European standards for lithium batteries.
The video will premiere at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 4 March.
