First laparoscopy-assisted total gastrectomy in Croatia performed

ZAGREB, 11 Aug (Hina) – A surgical team at the Split Clinical Hospital Centre, led by Dr. Antonije Majić, performed a laparoscopic surgical procedure to remove an entire stomach, this being the first time laparoscopy-assisted total gastrectomy (LATG), was conducted in Croatia and this part of Europe.

The surgical procedure was performed laparoscopically, or minimally invasively, the Split Hospital underlined, adding that the procedure’s complexity requires high-tech surgical equipment and exceptional precision and experience of the operating surgeon.

Using a laparoscopic approach through five working openings up to one centimetre in size, the patient’s entire stomach is removed while establishing the continuity of the digestive tube inside the abdomen, without the need for a large incision on the abdominal wall.

“The most demanding part of the procedure was to ensure the continuity of the digestive tube after removing the stomach. Laparoscopic surgery results in minimal trauma and minimal pain for the patient, accelerated healing, improved surgical outcome and accelerated discharge of the patient to home care “, said Dr Majić.

Once again under the leadership of Dr Zdravko Perko, KBC Split confirmed its status as one of the leaders of minimally invasive surgery in the entire region, the hospital said in a press release.
