First snow in Zagreb as it blankets parts of Croatia

Snow dalmatia

Croatia is experiencing a significant shift in weather as snow blankets parts of the country.

Heavy snowfall has already been reported in regions such as Lika, Gorski Kotar, and central Croatia, including cities like Zagreb, Karlovac, and Sisak. It is the first significant snowfall in the capital Zagreb this winter.

Meteorologists predict snowfall could exceed 30 centimetres in mountainous areas.

Weather Alerts and Travel Warnings

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued a yellow alert for central and mountainous areas due to snow, ice, and heavy precipitation.

The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) has advised drivers to stay informed about road conditions through their website or app. Roads are wet and slippery, with snow and ice reported in Gorski Kotar, Lika, and northwestern Croatia.

Motorists are urged to use winter equipment and adjust their driving to the conditions.

Snow and Rain Across the Country

While snow dominates inland areas, the Adriatic coast is dealing with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, especially in the southern regions.

Conditions are expected to improve later in the day as skies gradually clear from the northwest.

Winds are contributing to the challenging weather. Northeastern and northwestern winds are moderate to strong inland, while the coast experiences gusty south-westerlies and jugo winds, which will shift to strong bora winds by evening.

Temperatures range from -2°C to 3°C inland and 6°C to 11°C along the coast, dropping significantly later tonight.

Coastal areas are under a yellow alert for potential thunderstorms and strong winds.
