PARIS, 28 September 2020 – It has been a bad start for Croatia’s tennis players at the French Open, which got underway in Paris on Sunday.
Croatia’s hopes in the men’s singles draw have both tumbled out of the tournament in the first round.
Former US Open winner Marin Čilić was dealt a tough draw and had to face the no.3 seed and current U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem in the first round today.
The Austrian had no trouble against Čilić, as he did last month in at the US Open, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
On Sunday, 24th seed Borna Ćorić was upset by the unseeded Norbert Gombos from Slovakia. After losing the opening set, Ćorić managed to level the match but eventually went down in four sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the women’s singles draw, 13th seed Petra Martić will play Misaki Doi from Japan in the first round tomorrow.
Donna Vekić, who is the tournament’s 26th seed, will play Romanian Irina Bara first up also on Tuesday.
