Croatia’s Ivica Olić, who opened the scoring in last night’s 4-0 thumping of Cameroon in Brazil, nearly did not make the pitch at all after some match-day drama in his hotel room…
Workhorse Olić received stitches in his foot on the day of the match after he trod on a piece of glass when the door of his shower shattered. Some handy work from the team’s medical staff made sure the veteran striker was ok to start just hours later.
“The glass door in the bathroom smashed, and a piece got stuck in my foot. I have to thank the medical staff who reacted quickly. I was lucky, I didnt feel any pain. They convinced me that stiches was the best thing and everything was ok,” said Olić to 24sata.
The Wolfsburg striker become Croatia’s oldest scorer at a World Cup (34), beating a record held by current coach Niko Kovač by days. Olić also found the net the last time Croatia won a match at a World Cup when they beat Italy 2-1 in Japan in 2002. (pic: Drago Sopta / HNS)
