San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has just written himself into the NBA record book…
Popovich, who was born in Indiana on to a Serbian father and Croatian mother, has recorded his 1,000th NBA victory when his team beat Indiana 95-93 on Monday, making him just one of 9 coaches in NBA history to do so.
Often referred to as “Coach Pop” or simply “Pop”, the 66-year-old is the longest tenured active coach in both the NBA and all US major sports leagues having guided the Spurs for the last 19 seasons. Since taking over in 1996 Popovich has won 5 NBA titles with the Spurs and He holds the record for most consecutive winning seasons in NBA history at 17. He is one of only five coaches in NBA history to win five or more NBA championships. Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, Pat Riley, and John Kundla are the other coaches.
Only two coaches, Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, got to 1,000 NBA wins faster than Popovich, whilst only one other coach, Jerry Sloan, achieved the feat with one team. Sloan won 1,127 games with Utah.
