A significant investment has been approved for the construction of a fishing port in Komiža.

The project, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture with €5 million and the state budget with €8.8 million, aims to modernise the fishing infrastructure on the island of Vis.

Improved Infrastructure for Fishermen

The new port will provide a safer and more efficient space for unloading and loading equipment, ice, and catch. With the construction of new facilities, an increase in the number of berths for fishing boats is expected.

The project follows strict environmental standards to ensure the sustainability of fishing activities in the region.

First Phase Focused on Safety and Efficiency

The initial phase will focus on essential infrastructure, including the development of the primary breakwater, operational quays, and supporting installations. The goal is to ensure smooth and safe operations for local fishermen.

In addition to modern breakwaters and operational surfaces, the project will separate fishing and tourism activities to improve functionality for both sectors. Additional infrastructure will include a boat hoist, fuel station, and hospitality facilities.

Importance of Fisheries for the Region

Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban emphasised the importance of this project, stating, “This is a major step forward for our county and fishermen. Fisheries play a crucial role in maintaining local tradition and the economy. This project secures better conditions for future generations and supports other sectors dependent on fishing infrastructure, such as tourism and trade.”

The Split Port Authority, led by director Vice Mihanović, prioritised the development of Komiža’s port as part of its strategic plans. Mihanović expressed gratitude to the government and ministries involved, highlighting their role in bringing the project to the execution phase.
