An iconic tree in Dubrovnik, which is more than 500 years old, will be Croatia’s candidate for the 2018 European Tree of the Year.
The European Tree of the Year is an annual contest held to find the most ‘loveable tree’ in Europe and is held by the Environmental Partnership Association (EPA), an organization supported by the European Commission.
Croatia’s candidate – an Old Plane tree located at the Arboretum entrance in the Dubrovnik district of Trsteno, was decided today at a meeting, The Dubrovnik Times reports.
The tree is over 500 years old and is a unique specimen of its kind in Europe. The ancient tree is about 50 metres tall with its trunk 5 meters in diameter.
The tree survived the war and a huge fire.
The 2018 European Tree of the Year award ceremony will be held on 21 March.
The European Tree of the Year award aims to highlight the significance of old trees in the natural and cultural heritage that deserve care and protection.
