The Croatian region of Istria has been declared the best extra virgin olive oil region in the world for the eighth year by leading guide Flos Olei.
Flos Olei is the first international extra virgin olive oil guide and ranks the best olive oils in the world from olive-growing countries on five continents.
In the 2024 guide, Istria has once again reached the top and is the best in the world in terms of the number of included olive growers.
In total, Istria has 69 included olive growers, Puglia is second with 55, and Tuscany is third with 51, Glas Istre writes.
Istria has now featured in the guide for 20 years. For the last 16 years, Istria has had more than 50 included olive growers each year, being second in the world eight times in a row and when it was first in the world eight times, that number had to rise to more than 65.
It is truly an enormous achievement for the region, considering that out of 1,000 samples received, the top 500 were selected, and among those 500, there are a staggering 69 from Istria.
One Istrian olive oil even achieved an impressive 100 out of 100 points in the guide. It was the first time this has happened. Read more about that here.
