Ivan Meštrović Works Sell at Auction in Czech Republic

Two works by one of Croatia’s most famous artists which went under the hammer in the Czech Republic this weekend have sold.
Two charcoal on paper drawings from Ivan Meštrović, the man renowned as possibly the greatest sculptor of religious subject matter since the Renaissance, and the first living person to have a one man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, sold at auction on Saturday at Auction House Dorotheum in Prague.
The two pieces which sold were: Mother with a Child in Her Arm (1925) – 55.5 x 43 cm, which sold for €4,005 and Mother with a Child – 47 x 35 cm which fetched for €4,405 on the day. Numerous Meštrović sculptures have been sold at international auctions, including the piece ’19th and 20th Century European Sculpture’ in 2008 for $316,439. Meštrović died in 1962.
