Two works by one of Croatia’s most famous artists are set to go under the hammer in the Czech Republic later this month.
Two charcoal on paper drawings from Ivan Meštrović, the man renowned as possibly the greatest sculptor of religious subject matter since the Renaissance, and the first living person to have a one man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, will be sold at auction on 21 September at Auction House Dorotheum in Prague.
The two pieces on sale are: Mother with a Child in Her Arm (1925) – 55.5 x 43 cm and Mother with a Child – 47 x 35 cm, and can be viewed on Mutual Art’s website here. Numerous Meštrović sculptures have been sold at international auctions, including the piece ’19th and 20th Century European Sculpture’ in 2008 for $316,439. Meštrović died in 1962.
