29 January 2019 – Croatia vice-captain Ivan Rakitić (30) has picked up an award at the Mundo Deportivo Gala awards on Monday night in Spain.
Rakitić was the winner of the Repsol Extraordinary Trophy for his performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia at the Mundo Deportivo Gala awards last night.
Rakitić, who has been outstanding again this season for his club Barcelona, was a key part of the Croatian World Cup team which reached the final last summer.
Rakitić scored Croatia’s third goal against Argentina, as well as two deciding penalties in shoot-outs against Denmark and Russia.
Rakitić has 101 caps for Croatia and has scored 15 goals.
Although there are rumours that he is about to depart Barcelona and join Chelsea, the midfielder told the media last night of his desire to stay at the club.
“I want to be here, and if I can renew, be here for a few more years. I’m very happy here, everyone knows it, most of all the president. I don’t have to say anything else.”
Mundo Deportivo is a Spanish nationwide daily sports newspaper and they hold their awards gala annually.
