John Malkovich Holidaying in Opatija: ‘My Heaven on Earth’

American actor and director John Malkovich says he has found his ‘heaven on earth’ in Opatija on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast.

Malkovich, who has appeared in more than 70 films, receiving a number of Academy Award nominations, is currently holidaying in Opatija.

It is the first time the 64-year-old actor, who has Croatian roots, has been in Opatija. He told daily Jutarnji list that he arrived after being in Ljubljana for business last week.

“I have come to relax, for a holiday. I need it. This is my heaven on earth,” he told daily Jutarnji list.

Malkovich, who has appeared in films such as Empire of the Sun, The Killing Fields, Con Air, Of Mice and Men, Rounders, Ripley’s Game, Being John Malkovich, RED, Mulholland Falls, Dangerous Liaisons, and Warm Bodies, was quoted in an earlier interview saying the best holiday he has ever had was in Palmižana near Hvar.

Malkovich was born in Christopher, Illinois. His paternal grandparents were Croatian, hailing from Ozalj just north of Karlovac.

He will be back in Croatia later this year when he will perform as a narrator alongside the solo performance of the young internationally acclaimed pianist Anastasya Terenkova on the opening night of the 2017/2018 season at Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall on 7 October 2017.
