The action film Canary Black, starring Kate Beckinsale, has arrived in cinemas across Croatia.
The film was shot almost entirely in Zagreb, with the Croatian capital playing itself on screen.
Production services were managed by MP Filmska Produkcija, with filming supported under the Croatian Audiovisual Centre’s Filming in Croatia programme, which incentivises investment in the production of audiovisual works.
Filming for Canary Black took place in Zagreb and Rovinj during the autumn and winter of 2022/2023, spanning 65 shooting days in total.
Approximately 306 Croatian film professionals were involved in the project, including 69 actors.
Romina Tonković plays one of the film’s key roles, and Croatian talent was further showcased through the work of costume designer Nikolina Kostanjšek and make-up and special effects artist Tatjana Tomšić.
Additionally, the production engaged around 1,200 extras.
The project was conducted as part of the state incentive programme for investment in audiovisual production, administered by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Media, HAVC said.
MP Filmska Produkcija (led by Igor A. Nola) provided production services, with Vanja Sremac as the film’s director and Tomislav Pelesko as the location manager.
Canary Black is a spy action thriller that follows a CIA operative whose husband is kidnapped by terrorists, forcing her to betray her country to save him.
Alongside Kate Beckinsale, Rupert Friend (Anatomy of a Scandal, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Homeland) also stars in a leading role.
The film is directed by Pierre Morel, best known for the Liam Neeson hit Taken, with a screenplay by Matthew Kennedy.
The cinematography is by the award-winning French director of photography Thierry Arbogast, a frequent collaborator of Luc Besson (Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, Nikita, Lucy). Production design is by Sebastian Krawinkel, whose credits include Around the World in 80 Days and A Most Wanted Man.
The producers of Canary Black include Sébastien Raybaud and John Zois of Anton, Carsten Lorenz, Renee Tab, and Christopher Tuffin of Sentient Entertainment, Jeff Elliott for Brickell & Broadbridge International, and Marina Grasic for Oakhurst Entertainment. Pierre Morel and Kate Beckinsale also served as executive producers.
The film is now showing in cinemas nationwide from Thursday, 21 November.
