Lastovo like never before: Aerial documentary captures the island’s magic

Croatia’s breathtaking landscapes and rich culture take centre stage in the visually spectacular documentary series Oči sokolove (The Eyes of the Falcon).
This unique series explores ten Croatian regions from a bird’s-eye perspective, offering an immersive experience that blends stunning aerial footage with literary storytelling, personal narratives, and traditional music.
Each episode focuses on a different region, capturing its natural beauty, historical landmarks, and vibrant local traditions across all four seasons. From the rolling plains of Slavonia to the rugged coastline of Istria, viewers are treated to an unforgettable journey through Croatia’s diverse landscapes.
The series features the words of contemporary Croatian writers, including Kristian Novak, Dorta Jagić, Marko Tomaš, and others, who bring each region to life with their poetic and evocative storytelling.
Lastovo
The upcoming eighth episode, Let nad Lastovskim otočjem (Flight Over the Lastovo Archipelago), airs on Tuesday, 18 March, at 20:40 on HRT 1.
It offers a mesmerising look at one of Croatia’s most enchanting islands, known for its untouched nature and some of the clearest night skies in Europe.

Legend has it that even Odysseus set foot on Lastovo during his Mediterranean travels. The episode begins at the tiny islet of Glavat, where Croatian long-distance swimmer Dina Levačić embarks on a mission to raise awareness about marine conservation by swimming around Croatia’s many islands.
The journey continues with breathtaking aerial views of the Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park, home to unique flora and fauna. Alexandra Carol Horvat, the park’s head ranger, shares insights into the rich biodiversity of this protected area.

The documentary also captures the spirit of Lastovo’s traditions. Stunning drone footage showcases the Lastovo Carnival, a colourful celebration featuring masks, dance, music, and fireworks—an event deeply rooted in the island’s identity.
Local life on the island is also in focus. Fisherman Ante takes viewers on a morning catch in Zaklopatica, offering a glimpse into the challenges of living on a remote island. Meanwhile, lighthouse keeper Mladen welcomes us to Struga Lighthouse, located on the southernmost tip of the archipelago.

The episode also follows the thrilling Lastovo Trail race, highlighting the island’s rugged beauty, before concluding with a look at the traditional Lastovo fumari—the island’s iconic chimneys.

Directed by Filip Filković Philatz and narrated by Janko Popović Volarić, Oči sokolove is a stunning tribute to Croatia’s natural and cultural heritage. Produced by Antitalent for HRT in 2024, the series masterfully weaves together past and present, nature and tradition, offering an emotional and visually captivating journey through the country.
