You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Croatia Week has launched its ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’, where we will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.
Today’s Phrase
Today’s phrase of the day neka visi Pedro is a saying used when someone or group is made a scapegoat, or is blamed and made to pay for something even though there are others also involved – a sacrificial lamb, fall guy if you may. The literal translation is – Let Pedro be Hung – (Pedro being the scapegoat)
Example: “Did you hear Brazil sacked their coach Luiz Felipe Scolari after Croatia beat them 3-0 in the World Cup opener? – “I know, even though the entire team played rubbish and missed 2 penalties someone had to go – neka visi Pedro”
