You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation…
Our ‘Word / Phrase of the Week will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.
Galeb
Today’s phrase of the day is following on from yesterday’s theme and is a word that captures a slice of Dalmatia. Although many argue that the ‘true’ Galeb has died out as times have moved on and changed, the label ‘Galeb’ was given to one who was a successful womaniser, a smooth operator who was Don Juan-esq. The Galeb has a gift of the gab and a way to woo the ladies, especially the unsuspecting tourists on the beaches of Dalmatia. The literal translation is – seagull.
