Popular actor Leonardo DiCaprio has posted a video filmed in Croatia on his Instagram profile to his more than 62 million followers.
The video explains more about Croatia’s protected noble pen shell clams that are facing extinction.
DiCaprio is known as a prominent advocate for ecology and nature conservation, regularly addressing these issues on his Instagram profile. This week, he shared a video from Croatia, expressing his delight at the news he received about the endangered clams.
“Scientists have discovered a young group of endangered giant clams off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. The noble pen shell clam, which can grow to be up to 4 feet wide, has been declining since a deadly pathogen struck the species in 2016. Researchers hope to bring back the clams that play an important role in maintaining healthy underwater ecosystems,” he wrote.
Recently, scientists discovered 68 small noble pen shell clams clams near Poreč, a development they did not anticipate.
“These days, the situation is surprising; we really couldn’t have hoped for this even in our wildest dreams. We’ve broken all records,” said biologist Silvija Kipson in an interview with Dnevnik Nova TV.

Disease has destroyed nearly 99 percent of the world’s population of these clams, so they are immediately relocated to “sterile conditions.”
After finding only one in the Brijuni Islands in early November last year, and just a handful in the entire Mediterranean, scientists consider these numbers fantastic news – a sentiment DiCaprio definitely agrees with.
