On Saturday, July 16, 2022, JUNP Mljet, in cooperation with the Mljet Tourist Board, Hotel Odisej and the Faculty of Agriculture from Zagreb, organised the first fair of local products of the island.
Producers of Mljet wines, liqueurs, oils and other products presented indigenous products of the island to visitors on the waterfront in Pomena.
The fair was well attended, and tourists had the opportunity to taste wines, liqueurs and olive oil from the island of Mljet.
The awarding of diplomas to all awarded producers from the second evaluation of Mljet wines and strong alcoholic beverages, which was held in March of this year, was also organised.
The evaluation and the fair are the result of long-term cooperation between the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Zagreb and the Public Institution “Mljet National Park”, which began in 2019.
The original goal was to identify and restore the traditional cultivation of the old autochthonous grape varieties of the island of Mljet in order to record, preserve, analyse and potentially economically exploit the old grape varieties of Mljet, and to revitalise agriculture on the island of Mljet by restoring abandoned fields.
“Today, we can boast of numerous high-quality wines and strong alcoholic beverages, which visitors can buy in the souvenir shops of NP Mljet and which will be offered in the island’s restaurants. The cooperation will continue and we hope that in the future more and more visitors will have the opportunity to attend these and similar events and that the offer of domestic products will grow year by year,” wrote Diana Dabelić for NP Mljet said.
