ZAGREB, 21 July 2020 – Current captain Luka Modric is the best footballer in Croatian history, according to experts and fans in a large online poll conducted by leading newspaper Sportske Novosti.
Over the past few months, Sportske Novosti has been on the search for the greatest footballer in Croatian history and after input from a number of experienced experts and votes from readers, have released the results.
“Of course, all elections are, as a rule, a matter of subjectivity and as such subject to debate. To look for a magical formula of perfect choice, which will not provoke controversy and opposing views, it cannot be found. There is none. But this does not mean that different polls should not be conducted within different voter structures,” the newspaper explained.
Modric was the top choice of 7 of the 9 expert analysts polled as well as the readers’ number one choice.
Modric, who first debuted for Croatia in 2006, has 127 international caps and won silver at the World Cup with Croatia in 2018 in Russia. He has also won four European titles with Real, Ballon d’Or, World Cup Golden Ball and the AIPS Best Male Athlete of 2018 award.
