Luka Modrić, Croatia’s footballing legend, looks like he will extend his time with Real Madrid until 2026, according to top football journalist Fabrizio Romano.
This news broke on Instagram, with Romano calling it a ‘breaking story’. Modrić’s current deal with the Spanish giants ends this season, but if the rumours are true, he could still be wearing the famous white shirt at the age of 40.
The announcement comes just days after Modrić scored a wonder goal in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Girona in La Liga’s 25th round.
In the 41st minute, the Vatreni star chested down the ball and smashed a long-range shot into the net. It was his fourth goal of the season, alongside six assists, showing he’s still got plenty of magic in his boots.
Though Modrić isn’t a regular starter these days, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti can’t do without him. The Italian manager brings him into almost every game, relying on his experience and skill to steer the midfield.
After the Girona match, Ancelotti was full of praise, saying, “Luka has to continue as long as he wants. Modrić is a gift for football. Everything he does, he does very well. Real Madrid are lucky to have a legend like him.”
This potential contract extension fits perfectly with Modrić’s big dream: playing in one last World Cup in 2026.
The Croatian captain has already starred in four World Cups—2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
With 184 appearances and 27 goals for Croatia, he’s played more than half the matches the national team has had since independence.
