Luka Modrić signs new Real Madrid contract

Luka Modrić (38) will continue to wear the Real Madrid jersey next season.

Modrić, who first signed for Real Madrid back in 2012, will play in the 2024/25 season after signing a contract extension, the club confirmed today.

The Croatia captain will celebrate his 39th birthday in September, an age at which most footballers are either enjoying retirement or competing in less demanding leagues.

Despite his age, Modrić will lead Real Madrid in their defence of both the Champions League and the Spanish league titles.

Staying at Real Madrid was his greatest professional desire, and it has come true. This also means he will have the chance to surpass Ferenc Puskás and become the oldest player to play for Real Madrid, a milestone he is set to achieve in October.

Additionally, Modrić now has the opportunity to become the most decorated footballer in Real Madrid’s history. He currently shares this position with Nacho, who is no longer with the club and cannot add to his tally of 26 trophies.

Modrić’s new contract gives him the chance to surpass this record.

As of 30th June, Modrić was officially out of contract, but from today he is once again officially listed as a Real Madrid player.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has played a total of 534 matches for the Madrid giants, scoring 39 goals and providing 86 assists.

Among his most notable achievements are six Champions League titles (a record he shares with Dani Carvajal) and four La Liga titles.
