Magnitude 4.0 earthquake hits northern Croatia

An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale has struck Croatia on Tuesday morning.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 12 kilometres south of Prelog, approximately 70 kilometres from Zagreb.

It was felt across almost all of central Croatia.

Today, 13 August 2024, at 8:43 a.m., seismographs from the Seismological Service of the Republic of Croatia recorded a fairly strong earthquake 17 kilometres north of Križevci.

The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.0 on the Richter scale, with an estimated intensity of V degrees EMS. It was felt in a wider area of northern Croatia, the Croatian Seismological Service said.

EMSC was the first to report the earthquake, initially stating that it was 4.7 on the Richter scale, which was later revised to 4.1 and then to 3.9.

However, Croatian seismologists announced that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale.

‘The whole house shook’

Many residents of Croatia shared their experiences of the earthquake on EMSC. They wrote about how strongly the earthquake was felt:

“Ludbreg shook quite a bit,” “It was strongly felt,” “Terrible feeling, there was a rumble and the whole house shook,” “Međimurje trembled,” “It was strongly felt in Koprivnica,” “It shook the house to its foundations,” were just some of the comments on the earthquake, 24sata reported.
