Croatian international Marcelo Brozović, has been named among the 12 players nominated for the FIFA award for the best player in 2023, as announced by the International Football Federation (FIFA) on their official website.
Brozović, after eight years with Inter Milan, with whom he reached the UEFA Champions League final last season, made a career move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr this summer.
Alongside him, this year’s FIFA award for best player includes six more nominees who wore the shirts of European and English champions, as well as FA Cup winners Manchester City, namely German Ilkay Gundogan (who recently transferred to Barcelona), Argentine Julian Alvarez, Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, Norwegian Erling Haaland, Spaniard Rodri, and Portuguese Bernardo Silva.
The competition also features last year’s recipient, Argentine Lionel Messi, who moved to Inter Miami after leaving Paris SG this summer, the duo from Italian champions Napoli, Georgian Hviča Kvarachelija, and Nigerian Victor Osimhen, as well as Frenchman Kylian Mbappe and Englishman Declan Rice.
FIFA explained Brozović’s nomination with the following words: “Brozović epitomized consistency and class on the field during Inter’s journey to the UEFA Champions League final. The midfielder also secured the Italian Cup with Inter in the 2022/23 season and contributed to Croatia’s success in the Nations League, where they clinched silver. Brozović joined Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr in July 2023. Despite Croatia’s loss to Spain in the Nations League final after a penalty shootout, Brozović was named the Man of the Match.”
