Međimurje – first Croatian region to win prestigious Green Destination award

ZAGREB, 8 March (Hina) – Međimurje has been named a Green Destinations region at the ITB Berlin, the world’s biggest tourism fair, and has won the silver Green Destination award, which makes this northern Croatian region the first Croatian region and the world’s fourth region to join the Green Destinations certification programme.
Međimurje County said the recognition was a result of years of work of the county authorities and the local tourism board on creating sustainable tourism content.
Green Destinations is a nonprofit organisation cooperating with 200 destinations in more than 80 countries around the world. It enjoys exceptional quality recognition among partners and tourists around the world and develops sustainable and responsible tourism in line with UN principles and goals of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
The award was accepted at the ITB Berlin fair by Međimurje County head Matija Posavec.
Posavec noted that tourism development strategies in Međimurje were oriented towards sustainability, promotion of the rich natural heritage in the area between the Mura and Drava rivers, revitalisation of the local cultural heritage, quality regional wines and food and other local products.
Istria County’s Eco Domus project wins 3rd place in Business&Marketing category
At the Berlin fair, a project by Istria County called Eco Domus won the third place in the Business&Marketing category.
Istria County head Boris Miletić said that Eco Domus was a positive example of a responsible approach to the development of tourism.
He expressed gratitude to property owners in Istria whose properties have the Eco Domus label, a unique regional ecological certificate for private accommodation, launched in 2017, whose main characteristics are social and environmental responsibility, environmental and health protection, and the use of environmentally-friendly cleaning products and toiletries as well as natural materials, water and energy saving and waste recycling.
