The most common name and surname in Croatia and the rate of illiteracy in the country has been revealed on Friday after the director of the Central Bureau of Statistics announced more details from Croatia’s latest census conducted 2 years ago.
The most popular male name in Croatia is Ivan, followed by Josip, Marko, Stjepan and Tomislav, with Marija the most common female name followed by Ana and Ivana. The surname Horvat was Croatia’s equivalent of Smith in the UK and took the number one spot as the most common surname, followed by Kovacevic and Babic. The rate of illiterate people over the age of 10 in 2011 was 0.8% in Croatia, with 1.3% women and 0.4% men. The highest rate of illiteracy came from older women in rural areas of Croatia. According to the 2011 census Croatia’s population stands at 4,284,889.
