Honouring local heritage, Croatian Mint continues its “Croatian Heritage” series with a new release of gold and silver numismatic coins.

This latest issue is dedicated to the small and mystical island of Susak.

Located in the northern Adriatic, the island of Susak is renowned for its unique geological structure, shallow sandy bays, and rich cultural heritage.

The island is most recognisable for its unique traditional costume, which is as vivid as it is short. In fact, it is considered the shortest traditional costume in Europe, and possibly the world.

Young women on Susak wear short, brightly coloured skirts paired with pink or orange woollen socks, making the attire particularly striking.

The vibrant colours of the traditional costume have been captured by the Croatian Mint in these coins.

The one-ounce (31.103 grams) gold coin and the two-ounce (62.207 grams) silver coin are available in 200 and 400 pieces respectively, featuring coloured details.

The obverse of the coin displays a map of the island of Susak and Cape Darto with its chapel, while the reverse showcases the ceremonial Susak folk costume.

These coins are not just collector’s items, but also a reflection of Croatia’s rich cultural heritage.

The special significance of this release is further highlighted by the celebration of Emigrants’ Day, held on the last weekend of July on the island of Susak.

This year, on 28th July 2024, the Croatian Mint will participate in the event, adding to the festivities with the presentation of its new coins.

For those interested, the coins come in elegant dark blue gift boxes with a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank and feature details on the accompanying sleeves.
