Hrvatsko Društvo Sydney, a cultural club established by Croatian immigrants in 1951, is making progress in the construction of its new club – The Concord Community Club – in Sydney.
The latest updates reveal the arrival of Benkovac kamen (stone) from Croatia, which has started to be installed. The development of the Alfresco structure is also underway.
The new club is designed to offer diverse experiences through various zones, including a reception/function centre, sports bar, lounge area, bistro, beer garden, Croatian Memorial Garden, memorabilia room, class/conference room, and a children’s outdoor gym with green space.
A standout feature of the club is the Alfresco Cabana Area, inspired by Croatia’s Adriatic coast. This space will feature two wood-fired pizza ovens and charcoal grills, offering a modern yet authentic Croatian-inspired menu.
Founded in 1951, Hrvatsko Društvo Sydney has been a cornerstone for the Croatian community in Sydney, starting in Surry Hills and later moving to Marrikville in 1972. In 1982, the organisation acquired the old Sundowner Hotel in Punchbowl. The club raised funds to purchase the first Croatian church in Sydney at Summer Hill and established the Sydney Croatia Football Team, now known as Sydney United.
In November 2021, Hrvatsko Društvo Sydney acquired the old Concord RSL, where they are now constructing The Concord Community Club. Their vision for the establishment is to create a “modern, family-oriented, and Croatian-inspired club that not only serves as a home for Australians of Croatian descent but also becomes a destination for the broader local community.”
