New Kate Winslet film ‘Lee’ shot in Croatia now out

The biographical drama Lee, starring Oscar winner Kate Winslet, has arrived in cinemas, distributed by Blitz Film.

Part of the film was shot in Croatia, specifically in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, with the support of the service production company Ambasada Film, as part of the Filming in Croatia programme, which is run by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre to encourage investment in audiovisual productions.

The film crew spent a total of 10 shooting days in Croatia, in September 2022.

Out of 331 crew members, 118 were Croatian, along with 119 extras and 8 trainees, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre said.

The service production company was Ambasada Film, and the filming locations included Kupari and the Trsteno Arboretum. The project was supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre’s state incentive programme for audiovisual production.

Among those working on the film was renowned Croatian hair and make-up artist Ivana Primorac, known for her work on films such as Barbie, Darkest Hour, and Atonement.

Primorac was part of an impressive, award-winning team, which included cinematographer Pawel Edelman (The Pianist, Ray), production designer Gemma Jackson (Aladdin, The Gentlemen), costume designer Michael O’Connor, and two-time Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel).

“Kate was the driving force for all of us. Usually, as department heads, we engage in discussions with actors, especially the lead, about what we’ve researched and learned about the character. But this time, it was Kate who shared her knowledge with us, having researched the character for over eight years,” said Primorac.

The film Lee follows the extraordinary life of Lee Miller, the legendary American war photographer, documenting some of the most iconic images of the 20th century as she navigated the horrors of World War II.

Directed by Ellen Kuras and written by Liz Hannah, John Collee, and Marion Hume, the film delivers a powerful story of female courage, resilience, and artistic genius in the face of immense challenges. Alongside Kate Winslet, the cast includes fellow Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, Alexander Skarsgård, Andy Samberg, and many others.

Lee started being shown in CineStar multiplexes and other cinemas across Croatia from this week.
