The Croatian city of Šibenik is set to welcome a new, state-of-the-art football stadium at its home Šubićevac.

The big project, presented today, promises a modern facility that meets all UEFA standards, allowing it to host European matches and Croatian national team games.

The announcement came just days before Šibenik earned promotion back to the top division of the SuperSport HNL league.

“Our new stadium will have 8,000 seats and meet European standards, making it one of the top football venues in Croatia. It will definitely serve for European competitions,” said Club president Željko Karajica, Jutarnji list writes.

Šibenik Mayor Željko Burić emphasised that the project aligns with the city’s urban development plan (GUP) and that the roles of the club’s ownership and local government are clearly defined.

He assured that there are no obstacles to the project’s realisation and that efforts are now focused on securing the necessary financing. The entire project is estimated to cost around 50 million euros and will also include a new sports hall for the city.

“Šubićevac, known as ‘Šubija’ by the fans, is a part of our tradition and identity. Staying here respects our cultural heritage. This project is more than just a stadium; it’s a cultural destination for Šibenik, with activities expected to start this year. The location will also serve as a venue for concerts and events, linking sports, the city, and its identity,” added Burić.

The stadium will be owned by the city, with the Šibenik football team having exclusive use for the next 30 years. Architect Angela Vlaić presented the stadium design, highlighting its compliance with all UEFA categorisations.

The facility will feature amenities for the public, including cafes, a fan shop, restaurants, VIP lounges, media spaces, and areas under the stands for concerts and other non-sporting events.

“We have designed a stadium with covered stands, shielded by a membrane that protects the structure. It is a simple, unobtrusive design that complements its surroundings. This new space will inspire future generations with new dreams and aspirations,” concluded Vlaić.

This ambitious project marks a significant step forward for Šibenik, promising to enhance both its sports and cultural landscapes.
