Domagoj Srsen, a New York-born Croat with an American passport, hopes to one day represent Croatia n handball. The 22-year-old, who plays for the Zagreb Croatia osiguranje club, has already represented America in the sport but has aspirations to play for the “Cowboys”.
“Absolutely. That would be a dream for two reasons. First, it is my country, regardless that I am born in New York, and second, Croatia is one of the forces in world handball and since I have been playing in Croatia I realised what is world-class handball,” said Srsen to portal index.hr.
Srsen’s father joined his brother in New York at the age of 16, returned to Croatia to get married, then went back to the US where Domagoj was born. Srsen has represented America at handball over 20 times and is the owner of a unique record in Europe.
“I found out from my American team-mate, captain Mark Ortega, that I am the only American citizen to have ever played in handball’s champions league.”
