The New Zagreb Classic, now in its second year, has already established itself as the most popular international chess tournament in Croatia.
Taking place from 31 January to 2 February at the Maistra City Vibes Hotel International in Zagreb, this event has drawn 300 players from 16 countries, making it the largest chess tournament in Croatia by participation.
Unlike traditional tournaments, the New Zagreb Classic groups players based on skill rather than age or gender, offering a unique format designed to be inclusive and competitive for all.
The tournament features five sections and welcomes everyone, from children and beginners to seasoned players with national and international titles.
Launched by the Novi Zagreb Chess Club, one of Croatia’s most successful clubs, especially in developing young talent, the event aims to bring something fresh to the chess scene while respecting the rich local tradition.
The organisers sought to create an inclusive atmosphere where all participants feel welcome, regardless of their rating or background.
The tournament’s classic time control (90 minutes per player plus 30 seconds per move) is a departure from the more common rapid and blitz formats, making it a rare opportunity for players of all levels to compete in a more traditional setting.
This year’s participants include national champions, medalists from various age categories, and other accomplished players.
Among the standout competitors in the strongest Open A group are Croatia’s only female grandmaster Mirjana Medić, Dutch national champion Maaike Keetman, and 15-year-old Lara Zagorac, a multiple Croatian and European youth champion.
The event has garnered immense interest, with registration filling up weeks in advance and waitlists in place for latecomers.
Participants span all age groups, from primary school children to retirees, with some family members competing against each other on the board.
The New Zagreb Classic promises an exciting weekend of high-level chess and a celebration of the game’s growing popularity in Croatia.
