October temperature record in Croatia broken as people flock to the beaches

The October temperature record in Croatia has been broken as people flocked to the beaches over the weekend.

The forecast for the upcoming week suggests that this trend of warm days will continue, potentially breaking more temperature records, not only on the mainland but also along the Adriatic coast.

Following a hot September, October is maintaining the same pace across Croatia. In recent days, both date-specific and absolute temperature records for October have been shattered, 24sata reports.

While it’s still unofficial until confirmed by climatologists, according to data from the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), October 8, 2023, will go down in climatological databases as the day with the highest recorded temperature in October at meteorological stations in Ogulin, Zagreb, Kaštela, Velika Gorica, Varaždin, Bednja, and Delnice.

Ogulin: 30.4°C

Kaštela (Split Airport): 29.8°C

Zagreb Maksimir: 28.9°C

Velika Gorica (Zagreb Airport): 28.9°C

Varaždin: 28.1°C

Zagreb Grič: 28.0°C

Bednja: 27.5°C

Delnice: 26.2°C

In addition to the high temperatures, this period has been exceptionally dry in terms of precipitation.

During the first eight days of October, rainfall has been scarce, mostly limited to “trace amounts,” as observed in places like Bjelovar, Krapina, Mali Lošinj, Lekenik, and Ličko Lešće, and possibly a few other places.

This is a relatively rare occurrence, at least according to preliminary analysis. It can be concluded that since the mid-20th century, when official meteorological measurements were established at numerous DHMZ stations, such a dry period in almost the entire Croatia from the morning of October 1st to the morning of October 9th has only occurred in 1985 and 1986, according to meteorologist Zoran Vakula.
