The highly anticipated rock opera O’Dessa, directed and written by Geremy Jasper, is now available for streaming.
Viewers in the US can watch it on Hulu, while Croatian audiences can enjoy it on Disney Plus.
Filmed in Croatia
Filming took place in Croatia between May and July 2023, with a total of 38 shooting days.
Locations included Zagreb, Rijeka, and Krapina, providing a unique and visually striking backdrop for the film.
The production team included 411 members, with 346 Croatian film professionals, 337 extras, and 11 trainees participating in the project.
Producer Erika Milutin from Embassy Films, which handled the local production, highlighted Croatia’s appeal for international filmmakers.
“We focused on Zagreb and its surroundings, including the stunning landscapes of Zagorje, which served as the American prairie, and the industrial setting of Rijeka’s port,” she explained.
The film benefited from the incentives of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre’s Filming in Croatia programme.
O’Dessa follows the journey of a young farm girl who embarks on an epic quest to reclaim her family’s legacy. Her path leads her to a strange and dangerous city, where she finds love but must fight to save her soulmate’s soul. Music plays a vital role in this thrilling and emotional adventure.
A Star-Studded Cast with Croatian Talent
The film stars Sadie Sink, best known for Stranger Things, alongside Regina Hall, Kelly Macdonald, and Mark Boone Jr.
Croatian actors also had a significant presence, with Ksenija Marinković, Luka Barišić, Andrea Jurić, Luca Anić, Jadranka Matković, Josip Kučan, and Neven Paleček Papageno taking on key roles.
Producer Michael Gottwald praised Croatia for its diverse locations and cost-effective production.
“Our story required a mix of landscapes—harbours, farmland, hills, dry plains, and urban settings. Zagreb provided a perfect foundation for our fictional ‘Satylite City,’ and we even built a TV studio for our Onederworld set,” he shared.
The team at Embassy Films played a crucial role in ensuring a seamless production, with exceptional contributions from local set designers, prop masters, and lighting crews.
Where to Watch
From 20 March, O’Dessa is available for streaming on Hulu in the US and Disney Plus for Croatian viewers.
