Over the last few decades, the population structure in Zagreb has changed dramatically, with many saying that real purgers in Zagreb are a rarity today.
Purger is a nickname primarily used for a Zagreb resident whose ancestors, going back at least a few generations, were born in Zagreb and lived there.
Portal Zagreb.info addressed the subject of the oldest Zagreb surnames. The first known census in Zagreb was made in 1368. Approximately 300 homes and 2,810 residents are listed in that first census.
Many of these Zagreb surnames still exist today. Some have been changed, some have died out, but most of them are recognised by the old purgers.
