The agreement for the construction of the passenger terminal at Osijek Airport, worth 11.3 million euros, was signed on Tuesday between the company and the consortium of contractors, in the presence of the Mayor of Osijek, Ivan Radić, and the County Prefect of Osijek-Baranja County, Ivan Anušić.
Mayor Ivan Radić stated on this occasion that today is a great day for Osijek. Today, the renovation works on the main building of the railway station in Osijek were completed, and the renovation works at the airport have been initiated. These renovations, among other things, will enhance the first visual impression for all those arriving in Osijek by train or air travel.
“We can be extremely satisfied and proud. The investments in the railway station amount to four million euros plus VAT, and the renovation of the passenger terminal at the airport is valued at 11.3 million euros. These are significant investments in the city of Osijek and Osijek-Baranja County. Just two years ago, we had no international flights from Osijek, but now we have connections to Munich and London. This has resulted in a 134 percent increase in passenger numbers at the airport compared to last year,” Mayor Radić said.
He also mentioned that this year’s tourism figures are 20 percent better than the previous year, which was the most successful in the history of tourism in Osijek.
“Osijek is recovering economically and in every other way. We have record-high employment and record-low unemployment. Recently, we attracted the largest foreign investment in Osijek since Croatia’s independence. There is no stopping; we will continue in this direction,” he added. The Mayor also mentioned that in 2020, the City of Osijek did not allocate a single eurocent for the airport, but this year, they are investing 200,000 euros, and the results of these investments will soon be visible.
County Prefect Ivan Anušić stated that Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, and the Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure, as co-owners, recognize the potential of Osijek Airport.
“We finance and co-finance air routes connecting Osijek to Munich and London, contributing to national transportation within Croatia. We won’t stop there; we will open new routes. I believe that this airport has great potential, not only in terms of passenger traffic but primarily in economic and logistical terms. It will become more beautiful and representative,” Prefect Anušić emphasized.
Ivan Kos, the Director of Osijek Airport, highlighted the significance of this contract for the airport and the entire eastern Croatia region.
“The airport can be a catalyst for economic and social change in eastern Croatia, and this project is a good and quality indicator that we are moving in that direction. In addition to increasing the number of operations and flights, today’s central event is the renovation of the passenger terminal, which was built back in 1980. The renovation will not only be visual but also energy-efficient and technically advanced,” Kos said, expressing gratitude to the Croatian Government, the City of Osijek, and Osijek-Baranja County for their support.
Ivica Crnković, the representative of the consortium of contractors, explained that the reconstruction project consists of three phases, including interior design, adaptation to Schengen rules, facade reconstruction, and the construction of an external canopy. The work is being carried out by a consortium of companies consisting of Osijek-Koteks, Projektgradnja, and Tramis.
