ZAGREB, 1 December 2024 – By lighting the first Advent candle on the wreath at Manduševac on Trg Ban Josip Jelaćić, Advent in Zagreb 2024 was officially opened last night.
The event was attended by numerous locals and tourists, and the symbolic act of lighting the first candle was led by the Mayor of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević, marking the beginning of this celebrated occasion.
Speaking about the symbolism of the candles, the mayor said:
“Each Advent candle carries its own meaning – hope, peace, joy, and love. During this season, we often strive for perfection – the perfect gifts, perfect meals, and the perfect holiday experience – which can sometimes overwhelm us with stress.
However, the most precious gifts we can offer are our time, love, and attention. I wish everyone a holiday filled with moments of peace and happiness, shared with loved ones, and the opportunity to extend help to those in need.”
The ceremony was officiated by Monsignor Zlatko Koren, a canon of the Archdiocese of Zagreb, and attended by numerous dignitaries, including the Chief of Staff for the Prime Minister’s Office, Zvonimir Frka-Petešić; the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Tonči Glavina; the Director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfeld; and the Mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony.
Following the ceremony, Mayor Tomašević, accompanied by Deputy Mayors Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet, toured the Advent attractions.
The Ice Park at Tomislav Square was opened, the lights on Zrinjevac were illuminated, and visitors were treated to a festive programme at these and other key locations.
Advent Zagreb, which runs until 7th January 2025, offers a rich cultural and musical programme, blending tradition with modern attractions to create a unique atmosphere at both well-loved and new venues across the city.
Details about the programme and events are available on the official Advent Zagreb website.
