In the town of Bjelovar, located in north-central Croatia, construction has begun on the country’s most ambitious spa complex to date.
This €41.5 million Terme Bjelovar project (excluding VAT) represents the largest infrastructure investment in the city’s history, with €17 million financed through Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Lokalni.hr reported.
The project is set to be completed by spring 2026.
A Game-Changer for Bjelovar
The Terme Bjelovar complex will feature six pools, including an Olympic-sized pool, alongside numerous water attractions.
Notably, the facility is designed to be entirely energy self-sufficient. It will leverage geothermal energy instead of conventional gas, marking a first-of-its-kind sustainable initiative in Croatia.
Mayor Dario Hrebak emphasized that this greenfield project not only showcases innovation but also positions Bjelovar as a national leader in renewable energy use.
Boost to Local Economy and Tourism
The project is expected to transform Bjelovar and its surrounding region. Alongside the spa, a 130-room hotel is planned to accommodate visitors, further enhancing the area’s appeal as a health and sports tourism destination. Mayor Hrebak highlighted the potential for small farms (OPGs) and local producers to benefit from increased demand, solidifying Bjelovar’s position as a hub for both wellness and regional economic growth.
Sports and Year-Round Activities
Terme Bjelovar’s Olympic pool, heated by geothermal water, will be certified for international water polo and swimming competitions.
Agreements with major Croatian sports organizations, including the Croatian Olympic Committee, are already in place to host high-profile events and support athlete training. Local swimming clubs are thrilled about the year-round training opportunities and the potential to elevate water sports in the region.
Complementary Project: Garden House
In conjunction with Terme Bjelovar, the city is also developing Garden House, a luxurious tourist village featuring 35 apartments, natural pools, and various leisure facilities.
This initiative aims to further enrich the region’s tourism offering and attract a diverse range of visitors.
A Bright Future for Bjelovar
The construction, led by Radnik d.d. and Hidroregulacija d.o.o., marks a turning point for Bjelovar. Combining sustainability, sports, and tourism, Terme Bjelovar is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents while boosting the city’s regional and national prominence.
