Noa Zečević, the first baby of the new year in Croatia, was born at the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek at exactly midnight.

Professor Dr. Siniša Šijanović, Head of the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics, revealed that baby Noa was born precisely at midnight, weighing 3,820 grams and measuring 52 centimetres.

On Wednesday morning, the Mayor of Osijek, Ivan Radić, visited Noa and his mother to wish them good health, happiness, and success in the year ahead.

“We are delighted to welcome the first baby not only in Osijek but also in Croatia this year. The city of Osijek is starting the year with an increased allowance for newborns. Previously set at €350, the allowance is now €700. For this, we have allocated €150,000 in the 2025 budget,” said Mayor Radić.

He emphasised that the city’s support for families doesn’t stop at the birth of a child.

“Regarding preschool education, during our term, we have built five nurseries. This is crucial, as we have enrolled 777 more children compared to 2021, the year I became mayor. Over the past 30 years, the city built two nurseries, whereas we have constructed five in just our term, including one in Podravlje, the birthplace of little Noa,” he added.

Mayor Radić also announced upcoming projects for energy-efficient renovations of nurseries and the reconstruction and expansion of primary schools to introduce single-shift teaching.

“Following the opening of the new Unified Emergency Hospital Admission on City Day, I am pleased that the parliamentary amendment we proposed has been approved. This amendment paves the way for the construction of a new Clinical Hospital Centre, which is essential not just for Osijek but for the entire eastern region of Croatia, serving nearly one million residents. This project is valued at an impressive €700 million,” the mayor remarked, offering congratulations and thanks to the director and staff of Osijek’s hospital.
