A culinary initiative brought a taste of tradition to the kitchen of Split’s Clinical Hospital Centre (KBC Split), as Marija Vučković, better known as Mara Uštipak, prepared 1,500 Sinj uštipci for hospital staff and patients.

Sinj uštipci (Sinjskih uštipaka) are a beloved traditional dish from the Dalmatian town of Sinj.

These golden, deep-fried dough fritters are light, fluffy, and often enjoyed as a savoury or sweet treat, depending on the accompaniments. They hold a special place in local cuisine and are a symbol of warmth and hospitality.

Vučković, who dedicated an entire day to preparing the famous fritters, was delighted by the positive response.

“I’m happy to be part of this wonderful and meaningful project. It’s great to hear such positive feedback from both Firule and Križine. I hope I brightened the day of the hardworking staff at KBC Split, as well as the patients, to whom I wish a speedy recovery,” she said.

Her visit was part of ‘Food KBC Split’, a volunteer project launched by renowned dietitian Olja Martinić and top Croatian chef Hrvoje Zirojević.

The initiative brings together well-known names from Split’s gastronomic scene, including Ivan Pažanin, Nikola Krcatović, and Antonio Topčić.

Every Wednesday during Lent, guest chefs collaborate with hospital cooks and nutritionists to prepare special meals for both patients and staff, adding a touch of variety and comfort to hospital dining.

This initiative is not just about food – it’s about bringing a sense of community and care to those who need it most.

And with the aroma of freshly made Sinj uštipci filling the hospital kitchen, it’s safe to say that this latest contribution was a resounding success.
