Construction on the long-awaited new multi-million euro terminal building at Split Airport is progressing on schedule and is set to open to the public in July 2019.
With large crowds during the summer period, tourists will be pleased to learn that the airport’s expansion started earlier this year. After a number of delays since the 2013 expansion announcement, Split Airport signed an agreement with construction firms Viaduct, Kamgrad and KFK Tehnika at the end of 2016, allowing work to get underway.
“The foundations for the new building, which will stretch over 35.000 square metres, have been laid. It is situated between the existing terminal on the east side and the existing apron on the west side”, exyuaviation.com reports.
Stage one of the 60 million euros expansion project is expected to be complete in the autumn of 2018, with summer 2019 the completion date of stage two.
The new terminal will see the airport’s passenger capacity grow to 3.5 million per year.
“This project is of vital importance to Split Airport. The double-digit passenger growth we have recorded over the past five years has produced great challenges in the use of existing infrastructure, particularly during peak times.
This is Split Airport’s biggest investment over the past twenty years”, it said in a statement.
