VIŽINADA, 14 August 2019 – Sweet Istria (Slatka Istra) festival got underway on Wednesday, on the eve of Assumption Day, in the centre of the Istrian village of Vižinada.

This is the 23rd anniversary of the event which celebrates the sweet Istrian culinary tradition. The event validates the past and its customs in preparing sweets according to old recipes, like fritule, kroštule, cukerančić, paštine, pandešpanj, pinca, breskvice, bucolaj and povetice, as well as a special homemade selection of cakes called ‘istarske užance’.

On the opening day of the festival a competition was held. Leticija Šestan was awarded the best fritule by the judges, whilst Dušanka Kleva won best kroštule and Vanda Paladin won best pinca.

The best povetice was won by Ana Radešić, whilst the best pandešpanj was awarded to Zdenka Jakus. Nevija Gardoš won best bucolaj, Irena Bernobić-Šimonović won best paštine and Vera Mešinović took the award for best cukerančić.

The first day also featured workshops for the kids, exhibitions and degustations of wine, oil, and local products from Vižinada, as well as presentations and performances from Tara & T band and Klapa Iskon.

The festival continues today in Vižinada when the Sveta Marija Vela feast is celebrated. Danijela Martinovic and Farabuti will be performing.

Money raised during the festival, a total of 6,300 kuna so far, is being donated to be used to buy school books for children in Vižinada.
