If you are curious how the stunning Dalmatian island of Korcula used to look like more than 100 years ago, then you should check out the VirKo project.
VirKo is a digital library of the town library Ivan Vidali.
The aim of the project is to ensure the protection of valuable originals, to increase the accessibility of heritage materials, to ensure greater visibility of heritage institutions in the local community and beyond, to improve the cultural and tourism promotion of Korcula, to create new facilities and services, and to encourage scientific and research work on the revaluation of the material and intangible heritage of the island of Korcula.
The virtual library has been created with the help of the staff of the Archives and the City Museum. The material is selected for digitisation, with an assessment of its relevance to local history, and the needs and interests of users.
The library includes some fascinating old photos of the island and people, some more than 100 years old.
There are also old postcards from the island submitted from family archives.
You can visit the website here to see all the photos.
