The central Croatian city of Bjelovar, located around 80km from the capital Zagreb, is gearing up for an ambitious project to build an airport.

Mayor Dario Hrebak has described the airport project as a pivotal infrastructure initiative for the future, reports Klikni.hr.

While the announcement may come as a surprise to some residents, Hrebak is confident that Bjelovar will soon boast a modern airport.

The proposed airport is planned to feature a paved runway, control towers, and all the necessary infrastructure to accommodate smaller aircraft with capacities of 10 to 12 seats.

The project is expected to take 5 to 10 years to complete, with the primary goal of improving transport connectivity and attracting investors.

“This may sound ambitious at first, but this is a serious endeavour. Bjelovar has the expertise, location, and ambition. We are collaborating with the Aeroclub in Brezovac, and the land for the project has already been secured,” Hrebak explained, adding that a conceptual design for the airport is already in place.

The airport project is seen as a unique opportunity to attract investors to the region. Hrebak cited an example of a businessperson who highlighted the value of such infrastructure:

“With a private jet, I could reach Bjelovar from anywhere in Europe within an hour,” the entrepreneur remarked.

This development is set to enhance Bjelovar’s accessibility and position the city as an appealing destination for business ventures in the coming years.
