Primošten Makes Best European Hidden Gem 2024

Primošten

The world-renowned travel portal European Best Destinations has released a list of the 18 best hidden gems in Europe for 2024, and among them lies a Croatian beauty.

Primošten, located between the cities of Šibenik and Trogir on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, ranks third on the list, with the portal highlighting the popular beach Mala Raduča, one of the longest beaches in Croatia.

“For relaxation, there’s nothing better than a vacation in Croatia, enjoying the sun, crystal-clear sea, rich heritage, and gastronomy,” they wrote, adding that Primošten is about a 30-minute drive from Šibenik and approximately the same distance from Split Airport.

Mala Raduča Beach “Primošten is a top destination for sun and sea lovers. Mala Raduča Beach and its bars, restaurants, umbrellas, and water activities will captivate you at first sight. It’s one of the longest beaches in Croatia (2 kilometers), so you won’t have to rise early in the morning to find a spot and enjoy a well-deserved break,” they explained.

In earlier times, Primošten was positioned on an islet near the mainland. During the Turkish invasions in 1542, the islet was fortified with walls and towers, and a drawbridge connected it to the mainland for protection.

After the Turks withdrew, the drawbridge was replaced by a causeway, and in 1564, the settlement was named Primošten, derived from the Croatian word “primostiti,” meaning “to bridge.”

Perched on a hill, Primošten is dominated by the parish church of St. George, constructed in 1485 and renovated in 1760, situated near the local cemetery. From there, a remarkable view extends to the sea and the surrounding area.
