There has been some recognition on a European level for Croatia’s promising teenage tennis star Ana Konjuh. Ana has been short-listed for the prestigious European Olympic Committees (EOC) Piotr Nurowski award.
Konjuh (15), who made the semi-final of every Grand Slam event in 2013, including winning the Australian Open and US Open, will be up against four other European athletes for the award which is given to the most promising under 19 athlete in Europe. Three swimmers – Ruta Meilutyte (Lithuania), Abbie Wood (UK), Apostolos Christou (Greece) and Slovenian skier Cena Prevc have also been short-listed. The EOC award, which will be presented in Rome on 22 November, is presented in memory of the president of the Polish Olympic Committee, Piotr Nurowski, who in April 2010 was tragically killed in a plane crash with the Polish President Lech Kaczynskij.
