Croatia’s number one tennis player Marin Cilic will be trying to defend his title when the 24th Vegeta Croatia Open starts in the northern Adriatic town of Umag today.
Cilic will face stiff opposition from some top class players who will be in Umag this year, such as this year’s Wimbledon’s surprise package Jerzy Janowicz, world number 9 Richard Gasquet, veteran Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, former Umag open winner Alexabdr Dolgopolov, Frenchan Gael Monfils, and Italians Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi. The Umag tournament, which concludes on 28 July, is a popular social attraction on the calendar in Croatia with an Istrian gourmet festival, parties and a host of concerts running along side the tennis.
