2013 has been a record low year for adoptions in Croatia…
This year has seen the lowest number of kids adopted to families in Croatia with only 785 registered adoptions. Currently there are 252 kids in child care institutions in the country. Experts say that adoption procedures are a big factor in the low numbers.
“Until recently it was not clear whether the purpose of adoption was to find the child a parent or parents, or for prospective adoptive parents to get a child. So it was also unclear how the social welfare centers decided who to give a child to,” says Diana Topčić-Rosenberg, president of the Adopta Association in Croatia.
